Solutions for Class 8 English

Definition of Participle
A participle is a word which is formed from a verb and which takes the nature of both as a verb and adjective.
e.g. Looking at the snake, Mayank screamed and sprang up out of his chair.
In this sentence, ‘looking’ is the present participle (look+ ing) which qualifies the noun ‘Mayank.’ Hence it acts like an adjective. It is formed from a verb and also denotes the action of looking. Hence it acts as a verb too.
The above sentence can also be written as By / After / On looking at….
These are two other forms of participle Past and Perfect Participle.

Present Participle
It is formed by adding ‘ing’ to the original form of the main verb.
e.g. Knowing, following etc.
It is used in three forms as follows

As a verb (in continuous tense)
(i) I am reading the novel of William W.
(ii) The children were playing in the park.

As a verb and adjective
(i) Seeing that you are busy, I went to the other window.
(ii) Knowing that this is harmful, we should keep away from this.

As an adjective before a noun
(i) This is an interesting
(ii) The rising Sun often fascinates me.

Past Participle
The third form of the verb is called past participle,
e.g. Frozen, loaded etc.
It is also used in forms as follows

As a verb
(i) Meera has devoted herself to Krishna.
(ii) She was not interested in his stories.

As a verb and adjective
(i) Charmed with her looks, Kunal tried to talk to her.
(ii) Fully excited, the student shouted with joy.

As an adjective
(i) The Marines saw a dead child at the bank of the river.
(ii) They felt that it was an enchanted pool.

Perfect Participle
It shows that the action is complete, either at some time in the past or at present.

e.g.

Having walked continuously, I am fully exhausted now.
Having lost his wallet, he had to ask others for help.
Having collected enough matter, you can now write your essay.
Mr Chawla wants to retire from his business having earned a huge wealth.

To Sum Up

A participle is a verbal adjective. Hence it may qualify a noun or a pronoun.

e.g.
(i) Having his goals, decided, Geetika went for M tech.
(ii) Fed up with his lies, Shubhra decided to go away from there.

Since it is a verb, it can be qualified by an adverb.

e.g.
(i) Totally fed up with his lies, Shubhra decided to go away from there.
(ii) Deliberately ignoring the rules, he jumped over the red signal.

Since it is an adjective, it may qualify noun.

e.g.
(i) We had to walk a long distance in such a scroching heat.
(ii) Who is the stunning actor in your opinion?

Can be used attributively.

e.g.
(i) The sizzling summer has arrived again.
(ii) The winning team will get fabulous prizes.

Points to Remember
There must be a proper agreement of a participle with the subject.
e.g. Having won the first prize, we will get a party from
Shourya. This sentence is wrong. Since, it means ‘we have
won the first-prize’. But actually ‘Shourya’ has won it. Hence,
the correct sentence will be “Having won the first-prize,
Shourya will give us a party.”
