इस कहानी में, जोडी के पिता को एक रैटल साँप काट लेता है। वह तत्काल एक मादा हरिण को मारकर उसका दिल व यकृत से अपना जहर उतार लेते हैं। जोडी आश्चर्य करता है कि उस हरिणशावक का क्या होगा जो अपनी माँ के बिना रह गया है।

जोडी ने अपने आपको उस हरिणशावक के ख्यालों में लगा दिया। वे उस उजाड़ क्षेत्र को पार कर गये। वह बोला, “उत्तर की ओर काटो, मिल-वील। यह वह जगह है जहाँ पा को साँप ने काटा था और उन्होंने मादा हरिण को मारा था और मैंने शावक को देखा था।”
अचानक जोडी को मिल-वील का साथ पसंद नहीं आया। यदि वह शावक मर गया होगा या नहीं मिलेगा, तो वह अपनी निराशा उसे नहीं दिखाएगा। और यदि शावक वहाँ हुआ तो मिलन इतना प्रिय तथा गुप्त होगा कि वह किसी के साथ उसे नहीं बांट सकता था।

उसने कहा, “वह अब अधिक दूर नहीं है, परंतु घोड़े के लिए झाड़ियाँ बहुत घनी हैं। मैं पैदल जाऊँगा।” _ “परंतु तुम्हें अकेला छोड़ने में मुझे डर लगता है, बच्चे। यदि तुम खो गए या तुम्हें भी साँप ने काटा तो?” “मैं अपनी देखभाल कर लूंगा। मुझे उस शावक को ढूंढ़ने में अधिक समय लग सकता है। यदि वह कहीं चला गया होगा तो। तुम मुझे बस यहीं छोड़ दो।”“ठीक है, पर तुम ध्यान से जाना। तुम जानते हो उत्तर यहाँ है और पूर्व….?” “वहाँ, और वहाँ। ये लम्बे खजूर के पेड़ दिशासूचक का काम करेंगे।” “इतना लम्बा।” “इतना लम्बा, मिल-वील। मैं आभारी रहूँगा।”

वह घोड़े की टापों की आवाज़ समाप्त होने तक रुका रहा और फिर दायीं ओर मुड़ गया। झाड़ियाँ अभी भी थीं। केवल उसके अपने द्वारा तोड़ी जाने वाली टहनियों की आवाज़ ही उस शान्त जगह पर सुनाई दे रही थी। उसे एक बार तो आश्चर्य हुआ कि कहीं वह गलत दिशा में तो नहीं आ गया। तभी एक गिद्ध उसके सामने से उड़कर गया। वह बलूत वृक्षों के नीचे के साफ क्षेत्र में आ गया।

शावक ने अपनी नाक उठाई, उसे सूंघा। उसने अपना एक हाथ उठाया और उसकी नर्म गर्दन पर रख दिया। स्पर्श ने उसे उत्तेजित कर दिया। वह अपनी टांगों पर आगे बढ़ा जब तक वह उसके बिल्कुल करीब नहीं पहुँच गया। उसने अपनी बाजुएँ उसके शरीर के चारों ओर डाल दीं। हल्का सा कंपन आया परंतु वह हिला नहीं। उसने उस शावक को धीरे से हिलाया जैसे कि वह चीनी मिट्टी का हरिण हो और वह उसे तोड़ न दे। उसकी त्वचा काफी नर्म थी। वह कोमल, चमकदार और साफ सुथरी थी और उसमें से घास की मीठी खुशबू आ रही थी। वह धीरे से उठा और शावक को जमीन से उठाया। उसके पाँव निर्जीव रूप से लटक रहे थे। वे आश्चर्यजनक रूप से लम्बे थे और उसने उस शावक को अपनी बाहों में उतना ऊँचा उठाया जितना ऊँचा वह उठा सकता था।
