The Duck and the Kangaroo Introduction

This poem is about two friends-The Duck and the Kangaroo-set out on a long pleasure trip around the world. The Kangaroo, though happy to carry the Duck all the way on the tip of his tail, but is wary of her wet feet. The Duck suggests a solution. She puts woollen socks in its feet and a coat to keep out the cold. Kangaroo feels comportable over land and sea.

1. Said the Duck .. ….. the Kangaroo.(Page 97)

बत्तख ने कंगारू से कहा-हे दयालु! आप खेतों के ऊपर और पानी पर किस प्रकार फुदक लेते हो। ऐसा लगता है कि आप कभी रूकेंगे नहीं। मेरा जीवन तो नीरस है इस गन्दे तालाब में और तिसपर मैं इस संसार से परे जाने की इच्छुक हूँ। काश! मैं आपकी तरह फुदक पाती!” बत्तख ने कंगारू से कहा।

‘कृपा मुझे अपनी पीठ पर सवारी दे दो!” बत्तख ने कंगारू से कहा। “मैं एक दम खामोश बैठी रहँगी और पूरे दिन भर ‘क्वैक’ के अतिरिक्त कुछ नहीं कहूँगी। और हम धरती पर और समुद्र के ऊपर हँसी खुशी चारों ओर घूमेंगे; कृपया मुझे सैर पर ले चलो! हे कंगारू!” बत्तख ने कंगारू से कहा।

कंगारू ने बत्तख को कहा, “इसके लिए विचार करने की आवश्यकता है। पूरी तरह से देखने पर शायद यह मेरा अहोभाग्य हो सकता है, केवल एक आपत्ति सी प्रतीत होती है, जो, यदि तुम मुझे कडुवा बोलने को दो तो, वह है-तुम्हारे पैर बेकार, गीले तथा ठण्डे हैं। और शायद मुझे संधिवात से पीड़ित कर देंगे।” कंगारू ने कहा।

बत्तख बोली, “जब मैं चट्टानों पर बैठती हूँ, मैंने इस पर काफी कुछ सोचा है। और मैं चार जोड़ी ऊनी जुराबें लाई जो मेरे गद्दीदार पैरों में फिट बैठते हैं। और सर्दी से बचने के लिए मैंने एक लबादा खरीद लिया है, और प्रतिदिन मैं एक सिगार पी लूंगी। ये सभी कुछ मैं अपने प्रिय कंगारू के लिए कंरूगी-सत्य प्रेम के लिए करूंगी।”

कंगारू वोला! मैं तैयार हूँ! इस धुंधली चांदनी में। लेकिन प्रिय बत्तख, ‘मुझे संतुलन में रखने के लिए तुम्हें स्थिर बैठना होगा और मेरी पूंछ के अंतिम सिरे पर खामोश बैठे रहने होगा। इस प्रकार वे उछलते-कूदते चले और उन्होंने सारे विश्व के तीन चक्कर लगाये। और बत्तख तथा कंगारू जैसा खुश कोई भी नहीं था।
