A lot of people have the tendency, like the warrior in the story, to prove themselves superior to others. But one may be superior in one aspect and the other may be superior in some other things. For instance, the warrior may have claimed to be more powerful, but Ranji was better than him in swimming and diving. I don’t like people like the owner of the car who had put the sign: ‘I may be going slow but I am ahead of you’. It does not reflect good taste. I don’t get amused at such things. I don’t like people who show off and try to prove themselves better.

The Fight Introduction

Ranji discovered a pool in the forest and jumps into it for a swim. Then another boy comes who claims his right to the pool. There is a serious fight, the first round of which ends in a draw. Next day the two claimants face each other across the pool. But the other boy is deeply impressed with Ranji’s swimming and diving skill. So, instead of fighting, he befriends him and asks him to teach diving.

रनजी एक वन में एक कुण्ड (छोटा तालाब) की खोज करता है और उसमें तैरने के लिए छलांग लगाता है।
वहाँ, इस बात पर कि कुण्ड पर किसका अधिकार है, उसके और किसी अन्य के बीच गंभीर परेशानी आ जाती है। एक भिड़त हो जाती है।
लड़ाई का प्रथम दौर बिना हार-जीत के समाप्त हो जाता है।

1. Ranji had …. ….. of rain. (Page 45)

रनजी, एक महीने से कम ही राजपुर में रह पाया था, जब उसने जंगल में एक कुण्ड की खोज की। गर्मी चरम सीमा पर थी और अभी उसका स्कूल नहीं खुला था और अभी तक इस अर्धपर्वतीय स्थान पर कोई मित्र न बना पाने के कारण वह अकेला उन पहाड़ियों और जंगलों के बीच काफी घूमता था जो कस्बे के चारों ओर अनन्त फैले हुए थे। वर्ष के उस समय गर्मी, अत्यन्त गर्मी थी, और रनजी बनियान और निकर में घूम रहा था-जमीन से ऊपर उड़ने वाली चॉक जैसी सफेद धूल से उसके भूरे पैर सफेद हो गए थे। पृथ्वी झुलस सी गई थी, घास भूरी हो गई थी, पेड़ निर्जीव से मुश्किल से हिल रहे थे, ठंडी हवा या तरोताजा करने वाली वर्षा की बौछार की प्रतीक्षा करते हुए।

अगला दिन, गत दिन की तरह ही गर्म था। रनजी, कमजोर और सुस्त महसूस कर रहा था और लड़ाई करने के लिए बिल्कुल इच्छुक नहीं था। पिछले दिन की भिड़न्त से उसका शरीर कठोर हो गया था और दुःख रहा था। परन्तु वह चुनौती से इनकार नहीं कर सकता था। कुण्ड पर न पहुंचने का अर्थ था हार मान लेना। परन्तु वह चुपचाप अपनी हार को स्वीकार नहीं कर सकता था।

उसे अपने विरोधी को अन्त तक चुनौती देनी थी या उसे हराना था क्योंकि केवल तब ही उसे सम्मान मिल सकता था। यदि वह अब आत्मसमर्पण कर देता है तो सदा के लिए हार हो जाएगी; परन्तु आज लड़ाई करने के बाद और हार जाने के बाद वह फिर से लड़ाई करने और फिर हारने के लिए स्वतंत्र होगा। जब तक वह लड़ता रहेगा, जंगल के कुण्ड पर आने का उसका अधिकार बना रहेगा।
