कई वर्ष बीते, अर्नेस्ट अब अधेड़ आयु का व्यक्ति था। उसके पड़ोसियों के अनुसार जिस पर कभी संदेह नहीं किया जा सकता था कि वह आम तथा मिलनसार के सिवाय कछ और भी हो सकता था। वह केवल विनम्र तथा परिश्रमी था, यद्यपि वह विचारशील व्यक्ति था। परंतु उस भविष्यवाणी का क्या हुआ ? क्या वह पूरी हुई? आईये पढ़ें और ज्ञात करें।

वर्ष बीतते गये, तथा अर्नेस्ट के बाल सफेद होने लगे, तथा माथे व चेहरे पर झुर्रियाँ पड़ने लगीं। वह अब बूढ़ा हो गया था। पर उसका बुढ़ापा व्यर्थ में नहीं आया था, उसके सिर पर जितने सफेद बाल थे उससे अधिक संख्या में उसके मन में बुद्धिमानी पूर्ण विचार थे। अर्नेस्ट अब अनजान व्यक्ति नहीं रहा था। बिन चाहे, बिन ढूंढे उसने वह प्रसिद्धि पा ली थी जिसे अकसर लोग पाना चाहते हैं। वह घाटी से दूर तथा समस्त संसार में विख्यात हो गया था। कॉलेज शिक्षक और शहरों के विख्यात लोग भी, दूर-दूर से उसे देखने आते और अर्नेस्ट से बातें करते और वह उनसे बहुत ही विनम्र भाव से मिलता और जो उसको अच्छा लगता उसके बारे में खुलकर बातें करता। जब वे आपस में बतियाते, उसका चेहरा चमक उठता, अनजाने में, और उन पर संध्या की हल्की रोशनी की भाँति चमक उठता।

जब अर्नेस्ट बूढ़ा हो रहा था, ईश्वर ने एक नये कवि को धरती पर अवतरित किया। वह भी इसी घाटी का नागरिक था, परन्तु अपने जीवन का अधिकांश भाग दूर शहरों में व्यतीत कर चुका था और अपने मीठे स्वर चारों ओर बिखेर चुका था। न महान पाषाण चेहरे को भुलाया जा सका था क्योंकि कवि ने उसे एक कविता में उतार दिया था। कवि के गीत अर्नेस्ट के पास पहुंचे। वह उन्हें दिन भर का काम पूरा करने के पश्चात अपने दरवाजे के सामने बैठकर पढ़ा करता था। उन्हें पढ़ते-पढ़ते उसकी नजर उस पर्वत की ओर उठ जाती थी।
‘ओ महान पाषाणी चेहरे,” वह कहता, “क्या यह व्यक्ति तुम्हारी समानता का नहीं है?” चेहरा जैसा मुस्करा भर देता पर कोई उत्तर नहीं देता।

संयोगवश ऐसा हुआ कि उस कवि ने, जो यद्यपि बहुत दूर रहता था, न केवल अर्नेस्ट के बारे में बातें सुनीं थीं वरन् उसके चरित्र से प्रभावित हो गया था और उससे मिलने की कामना की जिसके साधारण चरित्र व बुद्धिमता के चर्चे थे। ग्रीष्म के एक दिन वह अर्नेस्ट के दरवाजे पर आ गया जहाँ उसने उस नेक वृद्ध व्यक्ति को पुस्तक पढ़ते पाया, साथ ही कभी-कभी वह प्यारपूर्वक पर्वत की ओर भी देख लेता था। अभिवादन करके कवि ने पूछा “क्या आप एक यात्री को एक रात यहाँ ठहरने देंगे?””प्रसन्नतापूर्वक,” अर्नेस्ट ने उत्तर दिया; और तब मुस्कराकर आगे कहा, “मैं सोचता हूँ कि मैंने कभी भी इस महान पाषाणी चेहरे को इतनी दयालुतापूर्वक एक अपरिचित व्यक्ति को देखते नहीं देखा।”

कवि उसके समीप बैठ गया, और उसने व अर्नेस्ट ने बातें कीं। कवि ने इससे पूर्व अर्नेस्ट जैसे किसी व्यक्ति के साथ इतनी बातें न की थीं-कितना बुद्धिमान, और विनम्र और दयालु इंसान! दूसरी ओर अर्नेस्ट कवि की विद्वत्ता से भी प्रभावित हो गया था। जैसे-जैसे अर्नेस्ट ने कवि को सुना, उसने कल्पना की कि विशाल पाषाणी चेहरा आगे की ओर झुककर सुन रहा था। उसने कवि की आँखों में घूरा। “आप कौन हैं, मेरे बेशकीमती मेहमान?” उसने पूछा। कवि ने अपनी अंगुली उस पुस्तक पर रखी जिसे अर्नेस्ट पढ़ रहा था। “आपने सारी कविताओं को पढ़ लिया है,” उसने कहा। “आप मुझे जानते हैं, तब, क्योंकि मैंने इन्हें लिखा था।”

अर्नेस्ट ने बार-बार कवि के अंग-प्रत्यंग का परीक्षण किया; वह विशाल पाषाणी चेहरे की ओर मुड़ा और फिर इधर देखा। उसने अपना सिर हिलाया और साँस भरी। . “आप उदास क्यों हैं?” कवि ने पूछा। “क्योंकि,” अर्नेस्ट ने उत्तर दिया, “मैं पूरे जीवन भर किसी व्यक्ति का इंतजार कर रहा हूँ और आशा करता हूँ कि मेरी खोज आप पर समाप्त होगी।” “आपने ऐसी आशा की,” कवि ने धीरे-धीरे मुस्कराकर उत्तर दिया “कि मुझ में विशाल पाषाणी चेहरे की समानता खोजो। मैं उस समानता के योग्य नहीं हूँ।”

“और क्यों नहीं?” अर्नेस्ट ने पूछा। उसने पुस्तक की ओर इशारा किया। “क्या ये विचार योग्य नहीं हैं?” । “आप इनमें किसी स्वर्गिक गीत की दूर की आवाज सुन सकते हैं। परंतु मेरा जीवन, प्रिय अर्नेस्ट, मेरे विचारों से मेल नहीं खाता। मैंने बहुत सपने देखे पर वे केवल सपने ही बने रहे। कभी-कभी मुझे लगता कि मैं अपने विचारों पर आस्था नहीं करता। फिर आप जो नेकी व सच्चाई के खोजकर्ता हों, क्या मुझमें उस पाषाणी चेहरे को देखने की आप आशा कर सकते हैं?” कवि ने उदास मन से कहा और उसकी आँखें आँसुओं से भीगों थीं। अर्नेस्ट की आँखों में भी। सर्यास्त के समय, जैसे कि पुरानी परम्परा रही है, अर्नेस्ट ने खुले मैदान में पड़ोसियों को भाषण देना था। वह कवि को साथ लिए सभास्थल में पहुँचा। वहाँ से विशाल पाषाणी चेहरा दिखाई देता था।

अर्नेस्ट ने अपने श्रोताओं पर एक जानी-पहचानी दयालुता भरी नजर डाली और उसने जो कुछ उसके मन तथा आत्मा में निहित था, लोगों को बताना शुरू किया। उसके शब्दों में शक्ति थी। क्योंकि वे उसके विचारों से सहमत थे और उसके विचारों में भी असलियत तथा महानता थी क्योंकि वे उसके अपने जीवन से संबंधित थे। वह मात्र साँस नहीं था जो वक्ता ने कहा, वे जीवन से जुड़े शब्द थे। एक अच्छे कार्यों का जीवन व स्वार्थहीन प्रेम उनमें घुला मिला था। कवि ने महसूस किया कि अर्नेस्ट का जीवन व चरित्र काव्य का एक आदर्श जज्बा था, जैसा उसने लिखा था उससे कहीं अधिक । उसकी आँखों में आँसू आ गए और उसने स्वयं से कहा कि कभी इस प्रिय विचारवान चेहरे जैसा मूल्यवान साधु नहीं देखा, जिसके सफेद बाल स्वयं महानता की गाथा कह रहे थे।

कुछ दूरी पर, जो स्पष्ट दिखाई पड़ता था, सूर्यास्त की सुनहरी रोशनी में विशाल पाषाणी चेहरा प्रकट हुआ जिसके चारों ओर सफेद धुंध थी, जिस प्रकार अर्नेस्ट के सफेद बाल हों। उसी क्षण अर्नेस्ट के चेहरे पर एक भाव उभरा कि कवि ने अपने हाथ ऊपर उठा दिए तथा चिल्लाया, “देखो! देखो!! अर्नेस्ट स्वयं ही उस विशाल पाषाणी चेहरे का प्रतिरूप है।”
