Write a composition describing a visit to the hills, or any place which you found beautiful and inspiring. Before writing, work in small groups. Discuss the points given below and decide if you want to use some of these points in your composition.

A Visit to A Hill Station
Mountains are means of communion with God. Last year I went to Shimla with my uncle. There we visited Kali Bari Mandir. It was at the height of 3500 ft from the ground. What a beautiful temple it was! I felt myself in the presence of the divine power. At such an height, one can’t help one with dreary of his thoughts. I found in the lap of some divine power that kept me alert and awake on such a high mountains. The limitless sky was very near to us. The height had pulled out the last ounce of our energy but the visit paid is worth remembering in our hearts. Tara Devi temple was the other temple we visited there with the devotion of heart-felt feelings. May goddess bless everyone with such an opportunity.

Major H.P.S. Ahluwalia was a member of the first successful Indian expedition to Mount Everest in 1965. He felt elated when he stood on the highest point in the world. मेजर एच पी एस आहलूवालिया सन 1965 में एवरेस्ट पर प्रथम सफल भारतीय पर्वत अभियान के एक सदस्य थे। उन्होंने कैसा महसूस किया जब वे संसार के सर्वोच्च बिन्दु पर खड़े थे? आओ हम उनकी कहानी उनकी जुबानी सुनें-चोटी पर पहुँचना और तब, उससे भी अधिक मुश्किल कार्य भीतरी चोटी पर चढ़ना रहा था।

1. Of all. …to climb. (Page 76)

एवरेस्ट की चोटी पर जव मैं खड़ा था, नीचे मीलों दूर तक फैला दृश्य देख रहा था तो मेरे मन में जितनी भी भावनाएँ उठीं उनमें प्रमुखतया विनम्रता का विचार था। मेरा शरीर कह रहा थाः “ईश्वर का धन्यवाद, यात्रा समाप्त हो गई है।” पर बहुत अधिक खुश होने की बजाय मन में एक उदासी का भी भाव था। इसका क्या यही कारण था कि मैंने सबसे ऊँची चढ़ाई तय कर ली थी और अब आगे चढ़ने के लिये कोई दूसरी पर्वत चोटी नहीं रहेगी, और इसके पश्चात् सभी रास्ते नीचे की ओर ही जायेंगे?

एवरेस्ट शिखर पर पहुँचकर आपके मन में हर्ष तथा कृतज्ञता की गहरी भावना जग जाती है। यह खुशी जीवनपर्यंत बनी रहने वाली होती है। यह अनुभव आपको पूरी तरह से बदल देता है। जो व्यक्ति पर्वतों में घूम आया है, वह कभी भी पहले सा नहीं रह सकता। एवरेस्ट विजय कर लेने के पश्चात् जब मैं पीछे मुड़ कर देखता हूँ तो मैं एक दूसरी चोटी का जिक्र किये बिना नहीं रह सकता-मन की चोटी-जो कोई कम कठिन नहीं है, तथा जिसपर विजय पाना सहज नहीं।

चोटी से नीचे उतरते समय जब शारीरिक थकान उतर गई तो मैंने अपने आपसे एक प्रश्न किया कि मैंने एवरेस्ट पर चढ़ना क्यों स्वीकार किया था? चोटी पर पहुंचने की प्रक्रिया ने मेरी कल्पना शक्ति पर इतनी मजबूत पकड़ क्यों बना ली थी? अब वह बात तो गुजरे जमाने की हो गई, ऐसी जो अभी कल ही हुई हो! हर दिन व्यतीत होने पर यह और अधिक दूर होती जायेगी।

और तब शेष क्या बचेगा? क्या मेरी स्मृतियाँ धुंधली पड़ती जायेंगी? इन सभी विचारों ने मुझे स्वयं से यह प्रश्न पूछने को प्रेरित किया कि लोग पर्वतों पर क्यों चढ़ते हैं? इस प्रश्न का उत्तर देना सरल नहीं। सरलतम उत्तर यह होगा, जैसा कि लोगों ने बताया है, “क्योंकि पर्वत वहाँ है।” वह काफी कठिनाइयाँ पेश करता है। मनुष्य को रुकावटों पर काबू पाने में आनन्द होता है। किसी पर्वतारोहण में बाधायें शारीरिक होती हैं। शिखर पर चढ़ाई करने का अर्थ है सहनशक्ति, दृढ़ता तथा इच्छाशक्ति। इन भौतिक गुणों का प्रदर्शन निःसन्देह खुशी देने वाला होता है, और मेरे साथ भी ऐसा ही हुआ।

मेरे पास इस प्रश्न का एक व्यक्तिगत उत्तर है। बचपन से ही मेरे मन में पर्वतों का खिंचाव रहा है। पर्वतों से दूर मैदानों में जाने पर मैं दुःखी हो जाता था। पर्वत प्रकृति का सर्वश्रेष्ठ रूप हैं। उनका सौंदर्य तथा भव्यता एक चुनौती प्रस्तुत करते हैं, तथा दूसरे लोगों की भांति मैं भी मानता हूँ कि पर्वत ईश्वर से निकटस्थ संबंध बनाने का साधन हैं। … एक बार यह स्वीकार कर लेने के पश्चात् प्रश्न बना ही रहता है: एवरेस्ट ही क्यों? क्योंकि यह सर्वोच्च है? सबसे कठोर है तथा अनेक विगत प्रयासों का विरोध कर चुका है।

इस पर पहुँचने में व्यक्ति की क्षमता चुक जाती है। चट्टानों और बर्फ से कठोर संघर्ष करना पड़ता है। एक बार सोच लिया जाए तो उसे आधे रास्ते में छोड़ा नहीं जा सकता जबकि व्यक्ति का अपना जीवन ही दाँव पर लगा होता है। आगे बढ़ने का मार्ग जितना दुष्कर होता है, उतना ही कठिन वापिस लौटना। और फिर जब चोटी पर विजय पा ली हो तो बेहद खुशी होती है कि हमने कोई बहुत बड़ा काम कर लिया है, किसी लड़ाई जीतने की सी भावना। विजय तथा हर्ष की भावना जागृत हो जाती है।

4. Glimpsing a………………possible. (Pages 77-78)

जब मैं दूर स्थित किसी पर्वत चोटी को निहारता हूँ तो मैं दूसरे लोक में पहुँच जाता हूँ। अपने अन्दर जो बदलाव मैं महसूस करता हूँ उसे आध्यात्मिक कहा जा सकता है। अपनी सुन्दरता, अलगाव, शक्ति, विकृत वन तथा मार्ग की कठिनाइयों के कारण पर्वत चोटी मुझे आकर्षित करती है-जैसा एवरेस्ट ने किया। इस चुनौती को अस्वीकार करना कठिन कार्य है।पीछे मुड़कर देखता हूँ तो पाता हूँ कि मैंने अभी तक यह तो बताया नहीं कि मैंने एवरेस्ट पर चढ़ाई क्यों की? यह बताना उतना ही कठिन है जिसका यह बताना कि आप साँस क्यों लेते हैं? आप अपने पड़ोसी की मदद क्यों करते हैं? आप अच्छे काम करना क्यों चाहते हैं? इन सबका कोई अंतिम उत्तर दे पाना संभव नहीं है।

और फिर यह बात भी है कि एवरेस्ट पर चढ़ना केवल शारीरिक चढ़ाई नहीं। जो व्यक्ति पर्वत चोटी पर पहुंच चुका है वह इस विशाल ब्रह्माण्ड में स्वयं अपने छोटेपन का अहसास कर लेता है। पर्वत पर भौतिक विजय पाना उपलब्धि का केवल एक भाग है। इसका महत्त्व कहीं अधिक है। इस विजय के कारण पूर्ति की भावना जगती है। अपने वातावरण के ऊपर उठने की गहरी इच्छा को संतोष मिलता है। यह भावना व्यक्ति में साहसिक कार्यों के प्रति अपार प्रेम का सूचक है। यह अनुभव मात्र शारीरिक नहीं है। यह भावनात्मक है। यह आध्यात्मिक है।

शिखर पर चढ़ाई के अंतिम प्रयास की कल्पना कीजिए। आप किसी अन्य के साथ रस्सी पकड़े हुए हैं। आप स्वयं वहाँ मजबूती से खड़े हैं। दूसरा व्यक्ति सख्त बर्फ में सीढ़ियाँ काटता है। फिर वह रस्से को बाँधता है। आप धीरे-धीरे ऊपर चढ़ते हैं। चढ़ाई बहुत कठोर है। आप हर कदम उठाने के लिये पूरी ताकत लगाते हैं। प्रसिद्ध पर्वतारोहियों ने अन्य लोगों द्वारा दी गई सहायता का विवरण हमें दिया है। उन्होंने यह भी बताया है कि किस प्रकार उन्हें उसी सहायता की आवश्यकता थी। अन्यथा उन्होंने अपना प्रयास छोड़ दिया होता। साँस लेना दुष्कर है। आप स्वयं को कोसते हैं कि इस काम में अपनी टाँग क्यों फँसाई।

आप को आश्चर्य होता है कि आपने चढ़ाई का काम स्वीकार ही क्यों किया। ऐसे क्षण आते हैं जब आपके मन में वापिस लौट जाने की इच्छा प्रबल हो जाती है। ऊपर चढ़ने की अपेक्षा नीचे उतरना बहुत राहत देगा। पर तभी यकायक उस मनोदशा से बाहर निकल आते हैं। आपके अन्दर कुछ ऐसा है जो आपको संघर्ष से भागने नहीं देता और आप आगे बढ़ चलते हैं। आपका साथी भी आपका साथ देता है। 50 फुट और अथवा 100 फुट। आप स्वयं से पूछते हैं। क्या इस चढ़ाई का कभी अंत भी होगा? आप अपने साथी की ओर देखते हैं। और वह आपकी ओर आपको एक दूसरे से प्रेरणा मिलती है। और तभी, अनजाने में ही आप स्वयं को चोटी पर पहुँचा पाते हैं।

चोटी से चारों ओर निगाह डालकर आप अपने को बताते हैं कि यह भ्रम उचित ही था। बादलों के बीच से कुछ और चोटियाँ दिखाई देती हैं। यदि आपकी किस्मत ने साथ दिया तो उन पर धूप पड़ रही होती है। चारों ओर चोटियाँ ऐसी ही दिखती हैं मानो चोटी के गले में हीरा-जड़ित कंठहार हो। आपको नीचे दूर ढलानों के नीचे घाटियाँ दिखाई देती हैं। पर्वत की चोटी से नीचे देखना उदासी भरा होता है। आप शीश झुका लेते हैं तथा जिस भी परमात्मा के आप उपासक हैं, उसे नमन कर पाते हैं।

मैं चोटी पर गुरूनानक का चित्र छोड़ आया। रावत ने दुर्गा का चित्र रखा। फू डोरजी ने बुद्ध का एक चिह्न वहाँ छोड़ा। एडमंड हिलेरी ने बर्फ में पत्थरों के ढेर के नीचे क्रास रख दिया था। ये विजय के चिह्न नहीं थे बल्कि आदर, श्रद्धा के प्रतीक हैं।

दोनों प्रकार के आरोहणों का प्रभाव एक-सा होता है। आप जिस भी पर्वत पर चढ़ते हैं। वह चाहे शारीरिक हो, भावनात्मक हो अथवा आध्यात्मिक, यह आरोहण आपको बदल देगा। यह आपको विश्व के बारे में तथा स्वयं अपने बारे में बहुत कुछ सिखा देता है। मैं यह सोचने का साहस कर सकता हूँ कि एवरेस्ट विजेता के रूप में मेरे अनुभव ने मुझे जीवन की कठिनाइयों का सामना करने की प्रेरणा दी है। पर्वत पर चढ़ाई एक सार्थक अनुभव रहा। अपने आंतरिक शिखर पर विजय पाना भी बराबर सार्थक अनुभव है। अपने आन्तरिक शिखर शायद एवरेस्ट से भी अधिक ऊँचे हैं।
